About the Course:

This course is a BTEC First Diploma, equivalent to four GCSEs at Grade C or above. It is suitable for those students who wish to follow the vocational route in Sixth Form and is a one year course. Travel and Tourism is the study of an exciting and diverse industry. It is the largest industry in the world,
offering a wide range of exciting jobs in far-flung destinations. The effects of tourism are worldwide and can either be positive or negative, depending on how they are managed. These and many other issues are covered in the course.

The course offers an introduction to the Travel and Tourism industry. There are a series of assignments, based around a vocational setting, which contribute to the student’s portfolio. All assessment is portfolio based.

The topics covered in the course include:

  • The UK Travel and Tourism industry
  • Exploring customer service in Travel and Tourism
  • European and UK holiday destinations
  • Business and employability skills for the tourism industry

The course encourages students to:

  • Develop customer service skills through role plays
  • Develop employability skills through presentations and reports
  • Develop an understanding of issues surrounding the Travel and Tourismindustry
  • Meet customer needs with appropriate products
  • Research information and products and assess their suitability

Assessment:

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism consists of three core units plus three specialist units. 

Core Units Students will study all three of these:

Unit 1 The UK Travel and Tourism industry
This develops knowledge of the possible employment opportunities within the Travel and Tourism industry. Examples from air travel, travel agents and
hotels are included to give students an idea of the wide scope of the UK industry.

Unit 2 Exploring Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
As a vocational course, appropriate skills are developed in customer service to equip students practically for the wide range of roles they may encounter. A variety of customer service best practices are reviewed.

Unit 3 UK Travel and Tourism Destinations
The UK has a wide range of internationally famous destinations attracting thousands of tourists each year. Their location, appeal and management
are considered to gain further understanding of these attractions.

Specialist Units Students will study three of these:

Unit 4 European Holiday Destinations
Unit 5 Exploring Marketing in Travel and Tourism
Unit 6 Business skills for Travel and Tourism
Unit 7 Developing Employability Skills for Travel and Tourism
Unit 8 Planning visits for Travel and Tourism

Is there anything else I need to know?

The BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism is a Level 2 course and is designed for students who are not yet ready to move to the demands of
advanced level courses. 

Progression Routes:

The course is highly regarded and will provide a good progression route to further study in the Sixth Form at Advanced Level or employment.
