St John Plessington Year 8s concluded the season by winning the Wirral Cup final on Tuesday night at Prenton Park, Tranmere Rovers.
The two sides were meeting for the third time this season and there was little to choose between them before SJP opened the scoring six minutes into the game.
The ball was played through to Leo Hamlett who tucked the ball nicely into the bottom left corner.
From then on it was a pretty even game and SJP couldn’t find a second goal to take control of the final, on the thirty second minute Bebington equalised after a corner from the right-hand side wasn’t cleared and thumped into the back of the net. One, one.
The scored didn’t stay level for long as straight from kick-off SJP went down the other end and another great finish from Leo Hamlett made it two one just before the break. SJP started the second half the way the first half ended, with Charlie Rooke getting in on the action to make it three, one in the third minute of the second half.
Bebington was all over the place as the ball is played over the top and Leo Hamlett grabs a hat-trick to make the game four, one and seems to have put the game to bed. It was too long before Leo Hamlett gets his fourth goal of the game to make it five, one in the forty fifth minute. This time it was Bebington’s turn to go down the other end from the kick-off as the striker cuts in from the right-hand side and dribbles past SJP defence and puts the ball into the bottom corner, but the referee blows for a penalty. The penalty was scored to make it five, two.
Bebington gave themselves a lifeline with thirteen minutes left to play as they made it five, three, as Bebington tried to push for a fourth in the sixty-fifth minute that man Leo Hamlett gets his fifth of the game to make it six, three, five minutes before full time.
SJP wasn’t finished there as the ball is played through to Saul Fox who takes it around the keeper and puts the ball in the net to make it seven, three.
Full time and SJP have won the Wirral Cup versus a very good Bebington side.
Well done to both teams!
