Remote education provision: information for parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home. 

For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

When pupils are sent home they will be directed to complete work on Google Classroom. Y11, 12 and 13 pupils have revision material which they should use in the meantime. 

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, PE lessons will take a different format and other practical subjects may need to be adapted.  

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Secondary school-aged pupils not working towards formal qualifications this year 5 hours a day

Secondary school-aged pupils working towards formal qualifications this year

5 hours minimum, with pupils following their timetable of 5 lessons a day and being directed towards additional revision and exam-preparation material which in Years 11,12 and 13 should be an additional 2 hours a day.

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

We are using google classroom to set work and provide feedback. Pupils can access the Google Classroom platform on a laptop, PC, smartphone or tablet. 

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • We have a limited number of laptops available to lend to pupils with no devices at home. These have been allocated and parents have been asked to collect. Where these devices are no longer needed we would ask parents to return them to us so they can be re-allocated.
  • Pupils still without a suitable device or Internet access will be asked to attend school so they can use the IT facilities and access Google Classroom.
  • Pupils unable to attend school will be provided with paper resources, in line with the work being set on Google Classroom. Parents will be asked to submit completed work at the end of each 2-week cycle or on the child's return to school (whichever comes first) so that feedback can be provided. How will my child be taught remotely?

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

Pupils in all year groups can expect the following:

  • live teaching (online lessons) which may be for the full hour or part of the hour, to direct and support pupils;
  • recorded teaching (e.g. Oak National Academy lessons accompanied by video/audio recordings made by teachers);
  • commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences;
  • work set on Google Classroom using revision guides, workbooks, textbooks and reading books pupils have at home.

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

  • We expect pupils to be online for Academic Review at 8.30.
  • Pupils should follow their timetabled 5 lesson a day, and they will see on Google Classroom if they are expected to join a live lesson or to complete work which has been set for that lesson.
  • Work should be submitted for each lesson by 15.30 each day. 

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Year teams will contact home if a child does not attend Academic Review, unless we have been informed of the absence in advanced.

Class teachers will check that work has been submitted for each lesson that day and will flag incomplete work to Year teams. We will then inform parents that work has not been completed and offer any support needed. Parents will be informed via phone calls and emails. 

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

  • Pupils' understanding will be checked and monitored during live lessons. 
  • Work submitted will be checked and any misunderstandings will be addressed via online feedback or in the next live lesson.
  • Once piece of work each fortnight will be assessed and feedback provided in line with out College Written Feedback Policy.
  • Pupils will complete quizzes and online tasks which check understanding and provide feedback to teachers, who will then act on that information when planning and delivering lessons. 

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • All questions or comments made by pupils to teachers will be acknowledged and responded to during working hours. If a pupil is struggling to understand a task then we would encourage them to ask the teacher directly for help or an explanation. 
  • Pupils with an EHCP will be contacted every week bu a member of the SEND team to offer support.
  • Pupils with an EHCP will be invited to attend school to access support, unless they have been instructed to self-isolate.
  • Teachers are aware of which students require additional support, and work will be tailored to suit their needs.

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above? 

If a child is self-isolating they will still be able to join Academic Review via Google Meet and then work will be set for the 5 classes each day, with some live teaching available where they can join in the activities with the rest of the class in school. Pupils self-isolating can continue to contact teachers for help and their work will be acknowledged and feedback will be provided.
