The vessel has been docked at Cammell Laird in Birkenhead since July 2019. The vessel will be part of the crucial research into our ever-changing climate as a result of the demands of the human population. The vessel was officially named in a special ceremony that took place the day before which brought special guests to the dockside including Sir David Attenborough, Prince William and Kate Middleton. The vessel aims to support the argument for climate change in monitoring ocean temperatures and the potential threat ice caps face from melting as a result of the warming temperatures. Our year 9 and year 10 Geographers and Triple Science students were supported at the site by Mr Houghton, Mr Bowden- Graham, Mrs Garland and Mrs Fleet. They were welcomed to the site by engineers and professionals, who offered an insight into areas such as what it’s like to live in the Arctic? What the vessel aims to achieve? And how much methane is traced in your breath? Pupils took on experiments throughout the morning, trialing different products that would be used in the near future during Arctic expeditions. Sam Hills was one of our pupils to visit “I really enjoyed the opportunity to visit the vessel, especially the stall that showed pre-historic data that allowed us to trace back temperatures thousands of years ago.” Many of our former students were also in attendance running stalls to promote the threat of climate change in our world. The pouring rain on the day still didn’t put our enthusiastic pupils off the morning trip, which made many of our pupils appreciate the situation our Earth is facing as our temperatures begin to rise.
